Rn- LPN- Full Time Nights (6 pm- 6 am)
Emergency Room LPN

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Licensed Practical Nurse assigned to the Emergency Room is responsible for patient care rendered in the Emergency Room by self or team members under the direction of the Registered Nurse and/or physician. Under the initiative and good judgment in the care of the emergency patient. The LPN may administer IM and oral medications to Emergency Room patients as ordered by the physician. The LPN may have special training for administering IV medications in an emergency situation. The LPN supervises the Emergency Room Clerk, Aide and/or orderly.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Knowledge of Emergency Room policies and procedures.

Observes, records, and reports to appropriate person symptoms, vital signs, reactions, and irregularities in the patient’s condition.

Knowledge of the emergency patient, monitoring equipment, emergency medications, inhalation therapy, EKG, intravenous therapy, sterile technique, and CPR.

Ability to meet the public and handle various situations, which do arise in an emergency situation.

Accurately and neatly completes Emergency Room forms.

Evaluates emergency patients, take vital signs, history, and uses good judgment in calling for assistance when needed.

Notifies the physician on call and has necessary information before making the call.

Assists the RN and/or physician in the care of the patient.

Aware of legal situations which are to be reported to the authorities and reports to the coroner or police as directed by the RN and/or physician.

Understand the legal implications of law in regard to patient rights.

Assists with the preparation of patients and family for treatments, operations and diagnostic studies.

Maintains a quiet, clean, and safe environment.

Aware of supply needs and replenishes supplies as required.

Under the direction of the RN and/or physician, assists with patient and family teaching. Gives out written instructions and records.

Administration of medication and recording. Special knowledge and skill in administration of medications to the emergency patient. (May be approved to administer IV medications in emergency situations after extensive instructions from RN and ER physician.)

Attends some positions related in-service and all mandatory in-services (such as: fire, safety, CPR and infection control). Participates in PI program.

Promotes line of communication between self, ER personnel, physicians, nursing personnel and other departments.

Reports all necessary situations or problems to ER charge nurse.

Understands staffing needs of the ER and is flexible and cooperative in meeting these needs.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Must have a positive attitude both personally and professionally.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Must hold an active Kentucky license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Additional education preparation is desirable. Satisfactory completion of a special orientation program for the Emergency Room is required.

Must have CPR certification.
