GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Surgery Aide is responsible for the cleaning and disinfecting of the Surgery Department on a daily basis. Additionally they maintain adequate supply levels as designated in the department. Provides both direct and support care to patients as directed. The Surgery Aide will be under the supervision of the Operating Room Director.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

Cleans and disinfects the operating rooms, PACU, and central sterile including cleaning assigned areas using appropriate cleaning solutions, emptying linen and trash containers as needed, assisting with cleaning operating rooms following procedures, keeping areas clean to include mopping of floors and cleaning of all equipment and countertops.

Clean autoclave weekly, will assist O.R. Tech’s in washing instruments, remove sterilized instruments from autoclave after cycle is complete.

Maintains adequate supply levels daily including, but not limited to, operating room linen, scrub solutions and brushes in scrub areas, and cover gowns at exits from department warmers filled with solutions and blankets.

Delivers patient care in accordance with hospital and department policies and procedures including but not limited to transporting patients, assisting with surgical preps and positioning of patients.

Responsible for cleaning O.R. lounges daily.

Maintains professional relationships and conveys relevant information to other members of the health care team.

Relays information appropriately over telephone, pagers and other communication devices.

Initiates problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships with peers.

Accepts re-assignment and demonstrates flexibility of work schedule/duty assignments.

Takes the initiative to identify and assist all areas and individuals within the department that need assistance.

Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Ability to work in an environment with patient populations of acute, chronic, and complex disease processes.

Excellent verbal and written skills with knowledge of medical terminology.

An ability to work in a sometimes chaotic work environment related to changing patient and procedure needs.

A positive attitude towards healthcare team members and diverse patient populations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

High school diploma or equivalent.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Regular public interactions, regular exposure to hazardous wastes, hazardous diseases and blood/bodily fluids; occasional exposure to chemical sterilizing agents; regular exposure to bacterial viruses; frequent work interruptions.
